I live in Arlington, VA, which was recognized as “America’s Fittest City” for eight years before Stronger Advisor was published.
In addition to speaking at companies about how to sustain high performance and avoid burnout, I’m also the Founder of Arlington Sports Conditioning (ASC), a top-rated group fitness program that has helped thousands of people build stronger habits.
Based on extensive data from ASC, here are three tips to be consistent with exercise:
1. Schedule your workouts in advance.
People who schedule their workouts in advance follow through much more often than those who wait until the last minute to decide.
Every Sunday morning (or days earlier), determine when, where, how, and how long you will exercise during the upcoming week.
2. Exercise at the same time on weekdays.
Train at the same time on weekdays, and exercise will become part of your daily routine.
If your work schedule or personal commitments make it impossible to work out at the same time each weekday, determine each Sunday (see tip #1) which days/times you will exercise during the upcoming week.
Avoid deciding each day whether and when you will work out, or you will be more likely to skip days when you are not in the mood.
3. Track your workout consistency.
If you fail to keep a record of your workout history, you will work out less often. Keeping track of your workout consistency holds you accountable.
All you need is a notebook, a spreadsheet, or a note on your phone. Each weekend, log how much you worked out during the prior week.
You do not need to maintain a perfect schedule with exercise. Aim to be consistent.
Take it one week at a time.
